I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this quote. From one standpoint I can agree, but from another I think it's a little unfair. I dunno, I thought it was odd.
I will agree, it is a little unfair. This quote doesn't talk about how hard some people have to work at it. I am blessed to have the ability to speak clearly and hear good so communication comes easy to me (most of the time). But if someone stutters or has a hearing problem communication can be very frustrating and exhausting work.
I also agree, this is not a fair statement. There are people who work very hard at being an effective communicator but still find themselves having difficulty at communicating. Communication is more than just someone who is deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or unable to speak. Communication is a mental process. Sometimes no matter how hard one works at being a better communicator, they still struggle. If there’s a delay in mental process this can causes one to struggle when trying to communicate. Environment and culture can play a role in this struggle as well.
I disagree also, the quote reminds me of a video I saw in my SED 104 class. The teacher in the video was teaching adults about learning disabilities. He came up with creative ways to make them feel what it was like to have a learning disability. His teaching techniques made them know what it is like to have Dislexia, auditory, and visual problems. I realized that learning disabilities are common and can happen to everyone. People with learning disabilites are just as intelligent as anyone they just have a hurdle to cross before something is learned.
I agree with Brack. I also saw that video and one thing that was pointed out was that many times as educators we tell the student that because they aren't getting certain content or communicating effectively that they are just not trying hard enough, and the fact of the matter is you can't be effective if you need the information to be in a different format... no matter how hard you try. In the video they had numerous teachers and other adults who were all capable of communicating effectively, but when the information was presented in a manner that they were not use to processing they all struggled, no matter how hard that they were trying.
