I think a special guest such as teacher(s) and student(s) is a great idea; just to have the opportunity to see the different types technology that is used in and out of the classrooms. I have worked with some of the communication devices, but since I am in the EBD classroom I am not familiar with alot of it like I was at one time.
During class last week, we discussed how those who are nonverbal are often misunderstood and believed to have cognitive delays, and too often, we as educators do not hold high enough expectations for these students. Last semester I took SED 104 where the book “Out of my Mind” by Sharon Draper was introduced to me. It is a book about a little girl who is nonverbal and is confined to a wheelchair. She can only move her thumbs and until she was given a sound board to help her vocalize her thoughts she was unable to communicate properly. Once she has the sound board she is able to explain that she needs to be challenged more in school, instead of being placed in the resource room of her school, and taught the same basic curriculum year after year. The book is meant for middle school age kids, so it’s a quick easy read. But it delivers a strong message. Hope a few of you take the time to check it out!
