Welcome to the Class Blog

Welcome to our Class Blog! It will be used in a variety of ways to extend course content.  It is open to YOU to find creative ways to use it to solidify and extend your own learning!!!

Topics discussed in class will be discussed and explored here through your interaction and sharing with one another.  Questions relative to class material and assignments are welcome here.  Information relative to tests will be posted here such as sample questions and model answers.

Posting to the blog - either your own initial posts, responding to others or a combination of the two is a REQUIRED part of the course and a part of your overall grade.  You are required to post each month of the semester and it is most beneficial to you and your peers if you take time to do this at least once weekly.

Get started by posting a brief introduction of yourself!  Please include your major, years at EKU and home town/state.  You may include other information about you, your family, future goals, etc.

  1. My name is Sarah Morrow. I am a freshman here at EKU, majoring in Special Education LBD. I am from Cincinnati Ohio and I participated in a vocational school program for aspiring teachers my senior year of high school. It was there that I fell in love with special education. I’m still undecided on what exactly I want to teach, but as of right now I am thinking high school students that have multiple handicaps. I am looking forward to this semester and being a part of SED 260!

  3. My name is Carol and I live in London, Kentucky, this is my second semester at EKU. I am working on my getting my degree in special education EBD with a minor in psychology. I have worked with students that suffer from severe to moderate disabilities and now with Emotional Behavior Disorders. I have worked in the educational field for 15 years and absolutely love my job! I hope someday I can help make a difference in the lives of those children. I consider what I do a blessing rather than a job. These children deserve a chance in life just as everyone else, most are dealt a bad hand and that is where we strive to make it better for them. Most come from broken and abusive homes and cry out for attention and misbehaving is the way they go about to get it.
I have been married for 26 years, my husband and I have two boys, both are married and now have families of their own. We have been blessed with one grandchild. There is nothing like being a grandparent! I love being outdoors, mowing, four wheeling and gardening; just anything to get me outside! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
I am looking forward to this class and semester.

  4. Greetings! My full name is Charity Danielle Reed and I'm from Barbourville Kentucky (which is in very close proximity to the blog above this one) but now I live in Richmond. This is my fourth year at EKU, however, I will not be graduating this semester due to the gift and the curse of the ITP program (I'm totes kidding I love ITP!) Which brings me to my major, I am studying to be an Interpreter of American Sign Language and I will have a minor in Special Education. Looking forward to the class! See you guys Thursday!

  6. Hello everyone. My name is Linda Stocker but my nickname is Shelly. I started school after being out for 10 yrs. I got saved, started teaching Preschool age through 2nd grade at church. When it was time for the 2nd grade children to move up to the 3rd grade class room they cried. From there God impressed upon my heart to return to school and become an elementary teacher. I am K through 5 certified with a minor in Child and Family (2005). I am a graduate student, I am currently enrolled in the IECE program and will complete my certification in the summer. Then I plan on finishing my masters in Reading and writing.

I taught first grade for 2 years in Estill County. However, when two of the schools merged they had too many teachers. Therefore, I lost my position. I taught 2 years in Fayette County. I taught in a special traditional classroom for behavior children grades 1st through 5th. The classroom was called Highly Structured Intervention Classroom. The students would work their way through a level system to return back to the classroom (98% of the students returned to the classroom successfully). I am currently subbing and looking for a full time position.

I live in Berea with my wonderful little dog named Layla. Who has me well trained. I also have two cats Gizzie and Otto and some fish. I don't have any children but get my niece Bethany almost every weekend. I am very active in my church, my passion is teaching and shaping lives, I like to spend time with my family and friends, and work out at the gym.

  7. Hello everyone! My name is Jaime Younce and I am a junior here at EKU. I am majoring in Special Education LBD and Elementary Education P-5. I have always known I wanted to be a teacher, but just decided last year that I wanted to teach special education. I'm looking forward to taking this class!

I am from a small town in Michigan called White Pigeon. It's about a six hour drive from here. I often get asked how I ended up at EKU, and the answer is: my mom went here, so I get a discount, the education program is good, I got a scholarship, the rest of my extended family lives in Eastern Kentucky so I can visit often and I wanted to get away from home, even though that meant leaving my family, friends and fiance! It was a great decision because I love it here! :)

  8. Hello, my name is Sarah Stokes and I am from London, KY. I transferred to EKU with my AA with hopes to teach middle school deaf and hard of hearing. I was initially inspired to work with the deaf and hard of hearing because I have a wonderful niece and nephew that were both born severely hearing impaired. I see first hand how much patience, and work it takes and is needed to help them learn and function in school and in everyday life. Hopefully after I graduate I will be able not to just make a difference in my families life but also in the school system.

This is my fourth semester at EKU and I can't wait to continue learning and getting on my way to a fulfilling career.

  10. Hello all!! I am Allen Ball (John Allen Ball. Sometimes that gets confusing for professors because I don't go by my first name. I am a grad student. I finished my bacholors degree here at EKU in the ITP (interpreter training program)in 2002. I worked in educational interpreting for 6 years Harrison County. Then after finishing my Masters Degree teaching LBD at Georgetown College, I took the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teaching position in Harrison County with a teaching waivor until I finished my DHH Certification. That is what I'm doing now. I am in my 3rd year teaching and love working with kids. I am also the Speech Team coach at the high school. I also work with the Drama Dept at the High school as the stage mananger and lighting tech. I sing karaoke as a hobby. I was a Karaoke DJ for 8 years, in between doing all this other stuff. I went back to school when I was 28 and am still continuing my education at age 40, so don't ever let anyone say that you can't do it. Only you can decide that and you have to believe in yourself! Be that little red train engine and shout it out, "I think I can!", and you will!.

  15. Hi! My name is Lacey Collip. I'm a sophomore, majoring in LBD/Elem. Ed (P-5). I am originally from Canada, but have been living in Indianapolis, IN since I was about 6. I have an older sister, who is married to a Marine, they live out in California. I have been taking Spanish since I was 5 and have been fluent since about 4th or 5th grade.
I realized I wanted to be a teacher my senior year of high school when I got the opportunity to take a class that allowed me to be a cadet teacher in a fourth grade classroom. I then began to realize that the major I had originally chosen to go to school for, Forensic Science, was not at all what I really wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. So here I am. :]
