Insperations
I am so glad Jena was able to come to class last night. Hearing stories like hers is one reason why I have chosen the major I have, ITP. Listening to student's stories about how their interpreters have made a huge impact on their education is an amazing thing to hear. Growing up with my mother, who is a teacher at KSD and also a certified interpreter is my other inspiration to get into this field. Many of her former students have told me many stories about how my mother helped them in school, either as their teacher or their interpreter. That is something I want to be able to do. I want to make an impact on student's lives. I want to help break down the communication barrier that deaf students have. I only hope I can do half the job my mom has done.

I thought it was neat that Jenna got the rules to change in the equestrian club at UK. I really enjoyed her speaking to us.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was very neat as well! Just shows you can do anything if you put your mind to it!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Jena visiting also. Listening to her talk about her experience of her high school years. When I was working as an interpreter in the high school setting, I remember how the student struggled with advocating for themselves in the freshman year but during the senior year, the student know how to advocate more for themself and ask for things that really helped them in class. I hope that I can inspire the little ones I work with now to be good advocates for themselves in the future.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Jena's visit. I appreciate her sharing her life and experiences through education with us.
ReplyDeleteJust being able to hear her story was awesome. My sister is deaf in one ear due to a surgery she had to have to remove a brain tumor when she was 18. She was offered a cochlear implant, but decided against it because she still has a full range of hearing in her left ear. It is still a struggle every so often, especially when riding in the car together when she drives because her good ear is next to the window with all the road noise. We are able to joke about all of it now though because she always complained that I talked too much so now she only hears about a normal amount of what I say and that is why we get along better now. Getting to witness how independent and happy Jena is, I no longer worry about my sister if she is to ever lose the hearing in her good ear, and it has lit a fire in me to try and at least learn the basics of ASL that I will need in a classroom in case I do ever have a student in the future.
