This video gives the perspective of a hearing child growing up with deaf parents and a deaf child growing up in a hearing family who doesn't primarily speak English (2 language barriers in this family).
In this video, the girl who's parents are deaf talks about how she was their personal interpreter growing up (if you want to listen to this part, it starts at 1:10 in the video). In my ASL 102 class, we watched a movie, Beyond Silence, about a girl who grew up in a deaf family. She too was her parents personal interpreter when it came to going to the bank, the store, doctor and other things that involved them communicating with non signing people. In this video, she says she feels like she missed out on a lot growing up, and this is exactly what the girl in Beyond Silence said, too. They both also said that their parents would even pull them out of school in order to interpret for them! It really made it reality when I watched this video because this isn't a movie, it's about a girls real life and how she grew up in a deaf family.
I am also in ASL 102 and had to watch the video Beyond the Silence. It was a very interesting movie. The girl did grow up with having both parents that were Deaf. Anywhere that they went she had to interpret and was very frustrating for the little girl. This movie does relate to this video and how the girl had to be the communication barrier for her family. It would be very difficult on a child with always having to communicate and relay message to other people. It is a very demanding task and can be very tiring.
